OpenStack Summit Paris 2014

Video recording and post production done by OpenStack Foundation.

Communication service providers embracing Network Function Virtualization (NFV) are endorsing OpenStack as providing the common API Service Framework required to deliver their applications and services with a lower time to market. This desire for agility is in turn driving increasing pressure for OpenStack to meet the performance, reliability, and determinism requirements of this sector. At the last OpenStack summit in Atlanta service providers and developers came together over the course of several "birds of a feather" (BoF) sessions to form a new OpenStack sub-team [1] with a stated goal of defining use cases to drive the identification and prioritization of requirements for enabling Network Function Virtualization (NFV) workloads on OpenStack clouds. This presentation will briefly describe the structure and operation of the subteam as well as the relationship with other groups such as ETSI NFV before moving on to discuss the current realities of OpenStack as a Framework for NFV both in terms of progress made, and work still to be done. Specific NFV use cases will be discussed before being linked to either outstanding gaps in OpenStack or to corresponding enablement work undertaken in the Juno cycle including: CPU/NUMA topology awareness and pinning enhancements Large pages enhancements DPDK enablement DPDK vSwitch enablement SR-IOV enhancements Finally we will discuss what still needs to be done and how you too can get involved in the NFV sub-team, helping to drive NFV enablement in the OpenStack community.
